I guess the point is that discussions like the linked github issue (https://github.com/igorw/retry/issues/3) should be over after 2 comments, not after a 196 comment flamewar. If we criticise some programming technique we should first ask ourselves if that technique is actually harmful in that context.

And then there's of course the greater narrative about the state of the industry, people chasing easy mantras instead of computer science, programmers ignorant of programming history, cargo cult programming etc.
