Gnome has gone too far with letting FAANG embrace and extend their operation

As with many open source projects, funding is a difficult issue. They need a lot of infrastructure to function, and that's not cheap.

They've expanded their bureaucracy to meet the needs of their expanding bureaucracy. ;)

It is a desktop environment that competes directly with Windows and macOS, with bits and pieces that come up in many open source products in all environments.
