I think the problem is that so many AI prognosticators talk about the impact of AI, without really talking about the impact of AI.
It’s easy to say “job xyz will be disrupted by AI”. Too few go the next level and say “that means that there will be almost no entry level positions for xyz, which means your kids, who are in school now, will face a very uncertain future. Here’s how you might prepare them for that future.”
Breathless pronouncements, not enough empathy, and not enough reckoning with the potential consequences. I’m not at all surprised people are turned off.
