The storage makes renewables dispatchable and if you look at the performance of the battery in Australia it appears to be much higher performance. The system dispatchs power in a fraction of the time a peaker plant can.

Takes a lot less time to throw a switch on what is essentially a capacitor than start a gas turbine, even if its the small peaker gas turbines.
